The Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse (ICU RN) will report to the appropriate ICU Nurse Manager and Chief Nurse for Critical Care. The practice of the ICU RN is based on the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Scope and Standards for Acute and Critical Care Nursing Practice which incorporates advances in scientific knowledge, clinical practice, technology and other changes in the dynamic healthcare environment. The scope and standards describe and measure the expected level of practice and professional performance for critical care registered nurses and articulates the contributions of critical care nursing to a patient and family-centered healthcare system. Critical care nursing is defined by AACN as a specialty that manages human responses to actual or potential life-threatening situations. The advanced specialized training of the ICU nurses allows for the care of critically ill patients who otherwise would have been transferred to another acute care facility with a higher acuity of care. This critical care staffing model reduces the fiscal cost of care that would have transferred to outside facilities. The ICU nurse provides high acuity care with compassion and dignity, following the ICARE values of the VANTHCS. Work Schedule: 8-12 hour day/night shift with rotating weekends, Tour of duty may include 11:30am- Midnight and 7:30pm-8:00am. Tour & schedule subject to change to meet the needs of the unit.
