The Nursing Assistant will provide direct and indirect care to psychiatric inpatients in the Mental Health Inpatient Psychiatric Unit of the Alexandria VA Health Care System. Current permanent VA employees or Federal employees from other agencies should apply under CBST-11128429-DL. Duties performed include, but are not limited to the following: Serves as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team in motivating patients and redirecting their behavior toward treatment plan goals; Encourages and assists patients in activities of daily living; Works with patients using a variety of treatment procedures in groups (i.e., reality orientation, small group therapy) or individually (one-to-one therapy) to explore their behavior, assume responsibility, and to accept consequences of poor judgment or non-acceptable behavior; Charts patients physical and emotional progress using the Problem Oriented Nursing Record format; Observes and reports desired effects or side effects of psychotropic medications; Participates in team meetings, community meetings, and other therapeutic groups by sharing thoughts and feelings in reference to what is going on and in reference to behavior of the participants; Supports multidisciplinary activities, i.e., Art Therapy, Recreational Therapy and Occupational Therapy by eliciting patient participation and explaining the concept and theoretical basis in a manner in which the patient understands; Provides atmosphere and a forum for a therapeutic relationship with patients by providing the opportunity for self-expression and appropriate self-motivated behavior by communicating acceptance or empathy and clear verbal feedback in a nonthreatening manner. Work Schedule: Rotating 12 hour shifts Financial Disclosure Report: Not required Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 pounds & over), heavy carrying (45 pounds & over), straight pulling (3 hours), pushing (3 hours); reaching above the shoulder, walking (8 - 12 hours), standing (8 - 12 hours), kneeling (3 hours), repeated bending (up to 4 hours), use of fingers, ability for rapid mental & muscular coordination simultaneously; 20/40 vision in each eye with or without correction, ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distinguish shades of colors, Hearing (aide permitted). Must be able to hear low pitch sounds. Must be able to pass color blindness test; emotional/mental stability.
