The Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse will be servicing Veterans at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Hospital. The Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse is accountable for delivering direct patient care to adult through geriatric aged patients by recognizing the age related needs and demonstrating the knowledge and care appropriate to that group. The LPN, under the direct supervision of the RN, MD, DO, NP or PA is held accountable for delivering direct patient care to adult through geriatric aged patients. He/she recognizes the age-related needs and demonstrates knowledge and care appropriate to that age group. He/she considers the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturation needs of the patients, demonstrates competence and correctly provides appropriate care for that age group or groups. He/she directs patients in restorative techniques to preserve functioning and prevent complications through education (health and life skills}, exercise, ambulation, gait training, and bowel/bladder training. Recognizes patient needs and providing appropriate care; Carries out basic and advanced nursing procedures with knowledge of the underlying principles of the procedure; Observes and reports changes in patients' physical condition and behavior; Initiates appropriate action in emergency situations when there are critical changes in the patients' condition; Collects data and collaborates in the assessment of the health status of the patient; Participates in health teaching and counseling to promote, attain, and maintain the optimum health level for patients; Performs support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures; Promotes a safe and therapeutic environment; Perform other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: The work schedule will be determined based on the needs of the Medical Center. The New England VA Medical Centers are acute care facilities operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week. While most tours of duty are scheduled during the day, the possibility of working evenings, nights and weekends to exist.
